At the second Link for Change event we discussed how the law, journalism and campaigning can come together to hold corporations accountable for abuse or malpractice. From challenging Facebook, organising Amazon workers, to bringing transparency to abuse within the financial industry our expert panel will guide us through what they have learnt from years of daring to stand up to corporate power.
We were joined by
Martha Dark, founder and director of Foxglove - nonprofit that uses the law and campaigning to stand up to tech giants and governments and for a future where technology is used to benefit everyone, not just the rich and powerful. Foxglove have forced disclosure of secret contracts, stopped the Home Office’s racist visa-streaming algorithm, and have brought cases in Kenya fighting for the human rights of Facebook content moderators. Prior to Foxglove Martha was head of operations at Reprieve and chief operating officer of Open Rights Group. Martha is on the board of EDRi and Fair Trials International.
Paul Caruana Galizia, reporter at Tortoise. Paul Caruana Galizia became a journalist after his mother was assassinated and since then has won an Orwell Prize special award, a British Journalism Award, and the Overseas Press Club of America's Cornelius Ryan Award for his reporting. His latest story was on allegations of sexual misconduct against Crispin Odey, which led to the dismantling of a £4-billion hedge fund. With his two brothers, he has received a Magnitsky Human Rights Award and an Anderson-Lucas-Norman Award for campaigning to achieve justice for Daphne.
After the panel discussion we heard short pitches of current campaigns underway in the network.
The event was hosted by Kat Sladden, Executive Director of Breakthrough.
